Concertina Barbed Wire: How to Choose the Right Type

Views 2026-7-20

Walking into a security fence decision can feel overwhelming, but choosing the right concertina barbed wire is actually quite simple if you know what to look for. I always tell my customers to focus on three things: coil diameter, blade type, and wire gauge. These specs determine how effective your fence will be.

Coil diameter is the first thing to consider. This is the size of the circle when the wire is stretched out. Common sizes are 450mm, 500mm, and 700mm. A smaller coil like 450mm is great for topping existing fences or for light residential security. It is easier to handle and install. For high-security areas like warehouses or industrial sites, go with 700mm or larger. The bigger coils create a wider, thicker barrier that is much harder to breach.

Blade type matters just as much. We offer standard razor blades and long blade options. Standard blades are perfect for general security. They are sharp and effective at deterring climbers. Long blades are designed for maximum deterrence. They have a larger cutting surface and are harder to grab or cut through. If you are in a high-risk area, long blades are worth the extra investment.

Wire gauge refers to the thickness of the steel. A lower gauge number means thicker wire. For example, 16-gauge wire is thicker and stronger than 18-gauge. Thicker wire is more resistant to cutting tools and physical force. For most applications, 16 or 17 gauge is ideal. If you need extreme strength, go with 14 or 15 gauge. Just remember that thicker wire is heavier and slightly harder to install.

Do not forget to check the core wire strength. High-tensile steel is a must. It ensures the wire stays tight and does not sag over time. Cheap, low-tensile wire will stretch and lose its shape, creating gaps in your security.

I always ask my customers what they are trying to protect. A backyard pool does not need the same wire as a military depot. Match the specs to your actual threat level. Over-specifying wastes money, while under-specifying leaves you vulnerable. Take a few minutes to understand these basics, and you will buy the perfect concertina barbed wire for your needs. It is a small effort that guarantees long-term peace of mind.
