After heavy rain, runoff may wash soil from the embankment edge, expose the slope face, or create small eroded sections beside the track. These areas can become a maintenance concern even when the main railway line has already been cleared.


The Lonavala–Karjat railway section in India faced this type of difficult environment in July 2026, when heavy monsoon rain triggered multiple landslides and disrupted railway operations. Restoration work later included gabion structures for slope and embankment stabilisation.
